3D plates and 4D plates

As a provider of 3D and 4D plates, we often hear a lot of misconceptions about these unique plating options, so stick with us as we clear the air and tell you all about our 3D and 4D plates.

3D plates are impactfully designed number plates which offer a dimensional appearance that is far more aesthetically pleasing than your standard number plate.

Created by applying industrial strength, long-last resin on top of 3D letters, plates have a distinctive raised character profile that gives a vehicle a modern finish.

The outlay of the gel characters provides an easy-to-read finish that is further enhanced by the durable top layer. This also means that 3D numbers are more durable than their standard counterparts.

4D plates are also made from acrylic but instead of polyurethane characters, they use professionally laser-cut characters made from acrylic sheets. This allows the characters to be thicker and more rectangular for a more eye-catching look.

You can also get 4D gel characters which have a ‘wet look’. These are made in the same way as 3D letters but have a thicker profile. All of our plating options are made in-house.

In terms of cost, 4D plates carry a premium over 3D plates by up to 20%. The reason 4D plates cost more is that the individual characters are laser cut, or they are of the thicker gel variety. In the case of laser-cut, the characters are also made to order in-house.

The 3D and 4D plates we offer are available in several styles:

  • 4D 3mm
  • 4D 5mm
  • 4D Gel
  • 4D Glitter Gel
  • Carbon 4D Gel
  • Krystal 4D
  • Krystal Gel

  • Black
  • Carbon Brickwork
  • Carbon Galaxy
  • Glitter Gel

At Bespoke Plates, the aspects of 3D and 4D number plates that we can personalise are:

  • The high-quality gel characters – Available in carbon, glitter, galaxy, or black finishes for a range of legal and show plate options.
  • The bordering design on your plate – On our website, you can choose from our variety of 3D plate border styles that are road safe and offer improved visibility.
  • Choice of plates – Select the front, back, or both. If the design of your plate is legal, you can amend just one of your plates if you wish.

The key difference between these plates is in their production and aesthetic. 3D plates are easier and faster to make than 4D plates, which also makes them cheaper. Both plates are made by hand using alignment bars.

The physical difference between 3D and 4D plates is in how raised the letters are and how they look. 4D characters are more raised and rectangular. 3D characters are less raised and more rounded for an understated look.

Show Plates

A show plate, or promotional plate, is a number plate which is for the show, only, rather than for use on the road. Show plates hold their own unique benefits for any collector, enthusiast and more.

Promotional plates are NOT legal to use on the road in the UK. They are used on non-road vehicles, which are not being driven on the road.

Show plates cannot be used as a substitute for a legitimate number plate, because they do not conform to DVLA guidelines.

You often find features on show plates that are not legal for actual number plates being used on the road, such as personalised text at the bottom, tinted acrylic, or different fonts and spacing of letters and numbers. This is illegal and can get you into trouble.

We fully believe that the sky should be the limit when it comes to customising your vehicle. That is why we offer full personalisation for plates in both legal and show forms.

No request is too much for us. Whether you want a legal plate with a special finish, or an extreme show plate, as a number plate maker with creativity flowing through our business, we can fulfil any order.

Private Plates

It may surprise you at this point to know we aren’t just a number plate maker, we also offer legally documented private plates.

Looking for a private plate instead? Private plates offer you the chance to have a plate that truly stands out by their ability to signify a special meaning, or even just the sheer simplicity of having less characters, whilst still remaining legal. As long as you buy from a certified seller.

Number plate accessories

A standard number plate is generally applied to the front & back bumper of vehicles with two screws on each side of the plate followed by a screw cap. This is a tried and tested method and is reliable enough as long as the screws are tightly fixed.

The lack of a frame around the registration plate can make it susceptible to debris that can be encountered on any road or motorway and with enough force could chip the borders of the plate. This is something you’d want to avoid especially if you’ve purchased a 3D, 4D or personalised number plate.

A number plate holder solves this issue, and we will tell you how.

The number plate holder we offer benefits from having protection around the borders of your plate whilst also allowing it screwed onto the bumper without going through the plate itself. This ensures that you don’t have to worry about drilling through your brand-new personalised plate.

Number plate holders also add an extra layer of security to your private plate as it makes it more difficult for thieves to steal them and use your plate to fool security cameras and ANPR’s. Driving without a number plate can lead to a £1000 fine, so it’s in your best interest to have your license plate reinforced.

We offer a full fitting service for your plate, so you can rest easy knowing your new plate is in the best hands. We understand some of you may want to attach your number plate holder yourself but may not know how to, not to worry, we have got you covered.
