As a provider of 3D and 4D plates, we often hear a lot of misconceptions about these unique plating options, so stick with us as we clear the air and tell you all about our 3D and 4D plates.
3D plates are impactfully designed number plates which offer a dimensional appearance that is far more aesthetically pleasing than your standard number plate.
Created by applying industrial strength, long-last resin on top of 3D letters, plates have a distinctive raised character profile that gives a vehicle a modern finish.
The outlay of the gel characters provides an easy-to-read finish that is further enhanced by the durable top layer. This also means that 3D numbers are more durable than their standard counterparts.
4D plates are also made from acrylic but instead of polyurethane characters, they use professionally laser-cut characters made from acrylic sheets. This allows the characters to be thicker and more rectangular for a more eye-catching look.
You can also get 4D gel characters which have a ‘wet look’. These are made in the same way as 3D letters but have a thicker profile. All of our plating options are made in-house.
In terms of cost, 4D plates carry a premium over 3D plates by up to 20%. The reason 4D plates cost more is that the individual characters are laser cut, or they are of the thicker gel variety. In the case of laser-cut, the characters are also made to order in-house.

At Bespoke Plates, the aspects of 3D and 4D number plates that we can personalise are:
- The high-quality gel characters – Available in carbon, glitter, galaxy, or black finishes for a range of legal and show plate options.
- The bordering design on your plate – On our website, you can choose from our variety of 3D plate border styles that are road safe and offer improved visibility.
- Choice of plates – Select the front, back, or both. If the design of your plate is legal, you can amend just one of your plates if you wish.
The key difference between these plates is in their production and aesthetic. 3D plates are easier and faster to make than 4D plates, which also makes them cheaper. Both plates are made by hand using alignment bars.
The physical difference between 3D and 4D plates is in how raised the letters are and how they look. 4D characters are more raised and rectangular. 3D characters are less raised and more rounded for an understated look.
