FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs for 3D Number Plates

We are pleased to confirm that 3D plate designs are all 100% street legal as long as they comply with the British Standard for Number Plates (BS AU 145e). Our complete guide to the legal side of 3D number plates outlines the standards to which legal plates must adhere. As long as your chosen 3D number plate features the relevant markings and features, it will be entirely compliant. As a DVLA-approved manufacturer of bespoke solutions, we guarantee that every product is legal.

Our customisable options and bespoke finishes are only offered as they meet these strict standards. We also use an alignment bar when producing your 3D plate to ensure that legal spacing and alignment are part of a quality promise to our customers. With Bespoke Plates, we don’t want you to spend unnecessary time researching your product. Instead, we have already done the work for you.

If you select legal modifications, your number plate will also pass all areas of the MOT. If your personalised plate is, however, made to a different colour, finish, or features different character spacing, you will fail the MOT. We not only ensure that plates meet the required standard, but our high-quality finish also exceeds these regulations as we want to ensure that you never experience issues with your Bespoke Plates product.

You will also receive official paperwork with your Bespoke Plates product so that you can show this at any time you may be asked for a copy.

Don’t let the streamlined design fool you; manufacturing high-quality custom number plates is a complex task, but one that we have perfected. 3D number plates are distinguished by their subtly elevated gel characters and the premium 3M reflective backing, resulting in a polished and high-quality appearance. When making any of our number plates, we always work to the exact precisions that the DVLA require to ensure that all products are legally compliant.

  • You can upgrade any vehicle, no matter the age, and give it a modern finish. Whether using a personalised registration or the existing one, a 3D plate gives a contemporary look. They also represent the driver as one who genuinely cares about their vehicle and offers insight into the over care and attention applied to the vehicle.
  • 3D number plates are more durable than traditional standard options. Thanks to high-quality materials, 3D number plates are much more durable than standard ones. The design means they can withstand any motoring knocks and the effects of overtime weathering, which standard plates are susceptible to.
  • Number plate visibility is improved, enhancing the safety of your vehicle. The gel letters are also visually more striking, meaning they can be seen more easily by other motorists, pedestrians, and road-traffic cameras.
  • It’s an affordable way to modify your vehicle, which is road legal. You can make lots of changes to your vehicle to add your personality, but these can increase rapidly in cost. A custom number plate is a great and legal method of adding your style in a way that doesn’t break the bank. With plates starting from £40, we think this is an affordable option.
  • You can advertise show vehicles in an eye-catching way. Perfect for PR events, shows, or even for giving as a gift, show 3D plates are a beautiful way to enhance the traditional number plate.

FAQs for 4D Plates

Our 4D number plates are also made in-house using a similar technique but different materials to achieve the raised, multi-dimensional finish they are known for.

Firstly, the design phase is essential to ensuring that you are pleased with your final product. Our website lets you choose the modifications you would like for your place and allows you to select whether it is legal or for show purposes.

Once the design is selected, we produce the standard number plate and cut out the tough acrylic characters using a precision cutting machine. We use the number plate as a template to ensure all legal spacing is maintained, along with the use of an alignment bar. The acrylic letters are laser cut for accuracy and applied to the backplate using an industrial-strength adhesive.

We then apply industrial-grade acrylic over the top. This naturally coats and settles around the characters for a slick appearance. The custom number plate is then placed in a low-heat oven to ensure any bubbles or marks are naturally removed. Once we are happy that the resin has settled and that the plate is looking its best, it is removed and left to cool completely before moving on to the final quality testing stage.

It is also important to consider how you install your 4D number plate, which our team are on hand to support you with. 4D plates are beautifully crafted, and each of our products showcases the complex design.

Characters – Choosing the style of your letters and numbers is one of the essential parts of making your 4D plate a reality. You can select from either 3mm, 5mm, or 4D acrylic characters to personalise your design to the look you want. The increased depths are all completely legal if the colour remains one tone. The raised profile of the characters provides the result of a deeper plate, so choosing your ideal size is important if you have a certain look in mind.

Plate Depth – Once you have chosen your characters, the depth of your plate will be determined. 4D plates are coated in an industrial-strength acrylic which provides a solid appearance. This feature, along with the raised characters, provides a luxury feel for plates.

As well as looking slick, the plates are also more durable than standard designs due to the reinforced materials. 4D plates have a boxy appearance which is characterised by a bigger surface area and raised profile from the car bodywork when fitted. The nature of the securely bonded design also gives the illusion of the plate being even thicker than it is.

At Bespoke Plates, we love the look of 4D plates for all types of vehicles. Car size doesn’t matter as these plates add attitude and style to any make or model. Not only do they give a vehicle a guaranteed contemporary design, but they also draw the eye to the plate in a way that ensures the bodywork is also the centre of attention.

3D plates are made with polyurethane gel resin which provides a smooth finish, and a slick raised profile due to the letters underneath. 4D plates are finished with a solid acrylic which provides a flat surface with 3D letters beneath.

The gel resin used within a 3D plate provides a glossy, almost shiny finish, whereas a 4D plate feature strong and matte finished acrylic characters. 4D number plates are often favoured for making a stronger visual statement as they stand out a lot more. They also have a distinctive boxy finish thanks to the acrylic coating and raised character profiles.

4D plates are also even more durable than their 3D counterparts, boasting an extra reinforced finish that can withstand the effects of road-based debris and other vehicle damage.

We only have the most skilled members within our team as we believe that quality employees produce the best work.
