What are Custom Number Plates?

Custom number plates are modifications that can be made to a standard vehicle plate to give it a contemporary and professional look. In the UK alone, £3 billion worth of personalised and customised plates are used, showing a big market for this modification.

One of the main reasons that custom number plates are popular is that they offer an easy way to upgrade a car of any age. In particular, they are favoured for used cars, of which the market has grown by 5.1% already in 2022. They also allow a reasonably affordable way to upgrade the look and feel of a car, being easy to install by the average motorist.

Vehicles are also one of the biggest financial investments that a consumer can make, so being able to add personality to them is very important. Custom plates allow either a personalised or standard registration to be embellished in a way that makes any vehicles look slick. They also make good financial investments and can increase the overall value of cars and bikes.

Custom number plates are available in both 3D and 4D designs. They offer a raised profile protected in either acrylic or resin to protect the finish. They also boast additional features such as improved visibility and increased durability.

These forms of number plates allow elements such as the tint, characters, border, and badges to be personalised. They can also be made legal, per the BS AU 145e 2021 British Standard, or bespoke for use in shows and events. Show plates allow complete personalisation, including the colours and shapes, as they are purely used for entertainment purposes.

Custom number plates are a popular accessory that also makes a great gift. We are not just manufacturers but also huge enthusiasts of this innovative motoring artform.

How much is a Custom Number Plate?

You should expect to pay anywhere from £30 - £90 for a professionally made, custom number plate. Whilst this may be more than the standard number plate, it is great value for money compared to the lifetime value of these durable products.

The cost includes the personalised design, quality materials, and skilled manufacturing, with most plates being handmade to ensure precision and legal accuracy.

Our standard plates start from £30 and can be modified as either a legal or show plate. With additional features only costing slightly extra, such as a tint for just £4.99, you can affordably upgrade your vehicle without selecting a 3D or 4D model. Prices are also the same for electric vehicle plates which include the green strop on the left-hand side.

3D custom number plates start from £40 and 4D from £50. Both options can again be configured to either be a legal or show plate, with variations available to choose from on the website as well as more bespoke solutions. Personalisation includes items such as borders (£4.99), side badges (£12.00) and tinting (£15.00), amongst other more bespoke options.

You should expect to pay a good price for your customised number plate as only top-quality materials should be used. As with anything, if the price is lower than the market average, it could represent that you will not be investing the quality you deserve. Every element, from the characters used to the adhesive and even the finishing material, must be of the highest standard to withstand any deterioration.

When you invest in a custom number plate, it is not something you should expect to replace in a few years, like tyres or windscreen wiper blades. Instead, they should be a reliable component of your vehicle's bodywork.

How is a 3D Custom Number Plate made?

Our 3D number plates are all made in-house using the best in manufacturing equipment by our team of industry experts. This comprises four precise stages, which are:

Design phase. Firstly, the design phase is super important as having a clear brief is essential to achieving the perfect product. Our website lets you choose the modifications you would like for your place and allows you to select whether it is legal or for show purposes. You can also contact our team directly if you have more bespoke needs.

Create the template and characters. Once the design is selected, we produce the standard number plate and cut out the 3D gel characters using a precision cutting machine. We use the number plate as a template to ensure all legal spacing is maintained, along with the use of an alignment bar. The gel letters are then pressed onto the acrylic plate using industry strength adhesive for a secure fit.

Coat in an industrial-grade resin. Only once the letters are entirely dried and meet the standards of our quality checks we then apply an industrial-grade resin over the top. This naturally coats and settles around the characters for a slick appearance. The custom number plate is then placed in a low-heat oven to ensure any bubbles or marks are naturally removed. Once we are happy that the resin has settled and that the plate is looking its best, it is removed and left to cool completely before moving onto the final stage.

Quality test. Once completely cured and solidified, we run our final quality checks and remove imperfections. We also test the durability and ensure the plate is ready for installation. This also includes a visual check to ensure no bubbles or marks have been left, along with a final check with our alignment tool to ensure complete legal compliance. You can then enjoy your new Bespoke Plates creation.

How is a 4D Custom Number Plate made?

Our 4D number plates are also made in-house using a similar technique but different materials to achieve the raised, multi-dimensional finish they are known for. The steps to create a 4D custom number plate are:

Design phase. Firstly, the design phase is essential to ensuring that you are pleased with your final product. Our website lets you choose the modifications you would like for your place and allows you to select whether it is legal or for show purposes. These are also extended for 4D plates to include additional character amends. You can also contact our team directly if you have more bespoke needs.

Create the template and characters. Once the design is selected, we produce the standard number plate and cut out the tough acrylic characters using a precision cutting machine. We use the number plate as a template to ensure all legal spacing is maintained, along with the use of an alignment bar. The acrylic letters are laser cut for accuracy and applied to the backplate using an industrial-strength adhesive.

Coat in an industrial-grade resin. Only once the letters are entirely dried and meet the standards of our quality checks, we then apply an industrial-grade acrylic over the top.

This also includes a visual check to ensure no bubbles or marks have been left and a final check with our alignment tool to ensure complete legal compliance.

Your impactful 4D number plate is now ready to install and enjoy!

FAQ’s

Custom number plates do have a higher price tag, but it is warranted when you look at the quality of materials that they are made from. The nature of 3D and 4D plates means they are made to last, so when you invest in a product, you buy something that will be with your car for a very long time. Industrial grade materials and tools are needed to achieve custom plates’ detailed and legal requirements.

The skills needed to run the machinery and work to high precision are also reflected in the price that you can expect to pay. We only have the most skilled members within our team as we believe that quality employees produce the best work.

If you are paying less for a product like this, it may be that the materials and craftsmanship are not to the standard that they should be. We think you should you only have to invest once for this quality of the product.

There are also various rules and regulations that are outlined in the British Standard for Number Plates (BS AU 145e) which adds extra levels of checking and modifications that need to be added to your design. The price tag, therefore, also includes the legal checks and compliance that ensure your custom plate will have no issues attached. How are custom number plates made?

Both our 3D and 4D number plates are made in similar ways.

Firstly, we let you choose your design using our online ordering form, which covers all components that make up your plate. Boasting a selection of modification options, you will have a clear view of any pricing at this stage.

Next, we produce a standard number as your personalised plate still needs to be the same colour and size. This also allows us to use the plate as a guide for your characters which will be printed in a durable gel for 3D number plates and produced in laser-cut acrylic for 4D custom plates.

We then install your digits using an industrial-strength adhesive, ensuring that letters are entirely secure. They are then left to dry and cure fully.

Finally, we coat it in clear acrylic and leave it to harden. Once ready, we smooth the edges and ensure your plate is ready for installation.

All products go through strict quality testing to ensure they meet our high standards. At this point any imperfections are rectified and that the customer is happy with their finished product.

At Bespoke Plates, we make the process simple.

Once you have chosen your product, follow the instructions to add any requirements that you have for modification needs. All prices will be shown at this stage for complete transparency. You then follow the checkout process and confirm when you would like installation included or whether you plan on doing that yourself.

Yes, 3D and 4D Custom Number Plates are legal, but ONLY when the rules laid out in the BS AU 145e 2021 British Standard have been adhered to. You can learn more about the legality of custom number plates in our blog post here.

3D and 4D number plates are both evolutions of the standard number plate which was introduced in 2001. We have created a complete blog post to explain the difference between 3D and 4D plates which you can read here.

Well, in most cases, a personalised number plate does not count as a modification to your car, hence, it won’t raise your insurance premiums.

You should always inform your insurance provider if you have installed custom number plates on your vehicle, and check whether this counts as a modification to your car. Your insurance provider will let you know if your new plates will affect your insurance in any way.

If you don’t tell your insurance provider that you have installed personalised number plates on your vehicle, then this could invalidate your insurance cover.

If you are driving a vehicle with illegally or incorrectly displayed number plates, then this may impact your car insurance. The police will pull you over and fine you up to £1,000, as the number plate is not identifiable on ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition).

Your insurance rate could bump up too if you have been handed a hefty motoring fine by the police. Your insurance premium could rise by up to 86%, which means you could be paying nearly twice the price.

That depends on your insurance provider’s policy. Not all insurance providers cover the loss of a custom number plate.

If you put a custom number plate on your vehicle and your vehicle gets stolen, inform your insurance provider immediately, and ask them whether their policy covers the loss of a custom number plate.
