A green number plate is becoming a common sight for any road user. With the rise of electric vehicles on our road, this is a natural step. However, not all electric cars actually have a green number plate.

Are non-electric vehicles becoming obsolete?

How to Look After Your Electric Vehicle Better

Not exactly, although non-electric vehicles are not becoming obsolete, they are facing a shift in the market as the years progress. This shift will mean dramatic changes for some vehicle users.

However, the sales of electric vehicles are rising, whilst traditional petrol and diesel cars are dropping. This coincides with a ban placed on the sale of brand-new non-electric cars from 2035 onwards. This means that you will not be able to buy a brand-new petrol or diesel car in the UK after this.

Despite this, you can still own a non-electric vehicle after the aforementioned date, there is no ban on using them. It is only purchasing one that is brand-new.

Are all-electric vehicles safe for the environment?

When it comes to the emissions output, then yes. All-electric vehicles are safer for the environment. However, when it comes to the manufacturing of electric vehicles, and other aspects, it becomes a bit of a grey area.

Firstly, when it comes to recycling batteries, there have been questions on the long-term sustainability of this option.

Additionally, the mining for raw materials such as lithium required for the Lithium-ion batteries can have environmental consequences. This is further exacerbated by working conditions of these mines, which some have labelled as unethical, in terms of the care given to the labourers, and the payment they receive.

Is it better to use public transport?

Regarding the environment, using public transport is a great alternative to reduce your eco-footprint, especially if it is adopted by a larger majority of people. However, when it comes to the UK specifically, some would argue that the current level of public transport isn’t up to standard.

This is made evident as it already struggles to meet the capacity and demands already put upon it, this can easily be rectified with strategic funding into the sector. And with the UK putting a heavy focus on reducing emissions, it would make sense to make public transport much more accessible and convenient.

Why does my electric car not have a green number plate?

There are two key reasons as to why an electric car would not have a green number plate. For clarity, a green number plate is a specific number plate with a green stripe on its side, this stripe indicates a zero-emissions vehicle. Below are the reasons as to why an electric car would not have a green number plate.

  1. The green number plate is currently not mandatory to have on a zero-emissions vehicle. This means electric vehicles and other zero-emissions vehicles can use private plates on their vehicle that they previously owned/used or have newly purchased.
  2. Some vehicles only use some electricity, these are known as hybrid vehicles. Because they still have an output of emissions, they do not qualify for a green number plate, which is exclusive to zero-emissions vehicles.

If your own vehicle has no green number plates, there could be various reasons, including…

  • The plates have been stolen.
  • The person you bought it from didn’t have a green number plate on the vehicle.
  • The vehicle is rented and has had customisations to the number plate made by the owner.
  • Private plates have been used instead.

How do you know a car is electric without the green number plate?

Although the green number plate is the tell-tale sign of an all-electric vehicle, a bystander does not need it to recognise the vehicle. This is because under further inspection, zero-emissions vehicles do not have an exhaust pipe.

Additionally, they will usually have the name of the vehicle’s model, which you can simply cross-reference online to confirm its emissions or lack thereof.

When it comes to the authorities, they have easy access to various databases which can quickly confirm the details of the vehicle, including whether it is zero-emissions or not.

Is a custom number plate legal?

Yes, a custom number plate is legal, as long as it follows the structure of UK number plates per the ‘BS AU 145e’ 2021 British Standard, (unless it is a private plate). Besides this, the plate must also have black characters against a yellow or white background.

Raised characters are permitted on a number plate, additionally there is no stipulation on the shape of the number plate, as long as the characters fit, and the plain yellow or white background is visible. This means that 3D and 4D number plates, in addition to Hex Plates, are perfectly legal custom plate options.

By using a recognised provider of custom plates such as Bespoke Plates, you can rest assured your customisation will be legal unless you specifically want a Show plate.
