Who Is Eligible for Green Number Plate?
As the scope of driving changes, with new methods of powering our vehicles slowly becoming the norm, these changes are also reflected on the registration plates.
This blog will answer the question ‘Who is eligible for green number plate?’

What is the function of a number plate?
A number plate has a simple function, it is to identify the vehicle it is attached to. Put simply, vehicle registration is like our fingerprint, completely unique. Number plates are unique from country to country.
It isn’t just the characters on the plate that make it unique, there is also signage that indicates the country of origin of the plate. This makes it easier to identify vehicles that are not in their country of origin.
A number plate is registered to a vehicle, which in turn is registered to its driver or drivers, this ensures (for the most part) that any situation in which the vehicle’s registered driver needs to be contacted, it can be easily done.
Can you customise electric vehicle registration plates?
Yes! We at Bespoke Plates offer our 3D/4D gel plate options, including the Hex plate shape option for anybody looking to get a unique electric vehicle registration plate.
Electric vehicle registration plates can be customised to the same degree as a regular registration plate. But you must make sure the green band is visible and present in its correct location.
Of course, you must make sure that your plate will be compliant with the laws of the UK. If you choose to upgrade your number plate through Bespoke Plates, you can rest easy knowing that we customise your plates with full compliance with the law.
Who is eligible for a green number plate?

Green number plates are only eligible for vehicles that only operate on electricity. The green of the plate relates to the fact the vehicle is ‘green’ or environmentally friendly. Any and every vehicle that operates totally via electricity will have a green number plate without exception.
In the UK, a green number plate refers to a marking found on a fully electric vehicle’s registration plate, this marking is a green stripe on the left-hand side of the vehicle’s plate. This indicator is important to be able to recognise an electric vehicle, especially with ULEZ zones becoming more normal in areas like Central London.
Can Hybrid cars have green number plates?
No. Hybrid cars are not eligible for a green number plate, this is purely due to the fact that they still rely on petrol or diesel fuel sources.
Is it better to have an electric vehicle?
In terms of your carbon footprint, it is better to have an electric vehicle. Performance wise, it may take some getting used to if you haven’t driven an electric vehicle before, but with advancements in technology, electric vehicles are developing at a fast rate.
Electric vehicles may not be the best option for you, if you don’t have easy access to charging points, understandably.
Whether your vehicle is electric or not, just know that any number plate needs that you have, we can sort out for you!

The legalities of custom registration plates
To clear up any confusion, plate modification, whether that be Hex plates, or gel plates (3D & 4D) are 100% LEGAL if you stick to the outlined rules from the DVLA.*
*Please do your due diligence and research, some unverified registration plate providers may not be making their plates to the legal specification, which could become an inconvenience for you. Visiting Bespoke Plates is the best way to avoid this trouble.
Alternatively, using the government gateway to find licenced and approved plate makers is the best option for peace of mind and finding plate makers close to you. Enter your postcode on the government gateway website.
What are the legal requirements for a registration plate?
The legal terms that a registration plate must adhere to are:
- be made from a reflective material – for road safety
- black display characters on a white background (front plate)
- black display characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
- not have a background pattern – so as not to distort the readability of your plate
- be marked to show who supplied the registration plate – to assist with thefts and sourcing queries
- be marked with a British Standard number – this is ‘BS AU 145e’ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021
- Characters must not be removable or reflective. If your registration plates were fitted after 1 September 2021, they must also be a single shade of black.
