What is a private plate?

What is a private plate?

A private plate is a number plate that has a unique set of characters, this can be in the sense that it has fewer characters, or spells out something, and more. Private plates are completely optional, and serve no purpose other than adding a level of personalisation to the vehicle in question.

Where can you get a private plate?

Private plates can be purchased from DVLA auctions, private collectors, which can be an individual or a business, and from the current owner of the plate in question. With any of these options, legal documentation is required to ensure the plate is legitimate, and the original ownership is also legitimate.

What happens if you buy a fake private plate?

Unfortunately, there are sellers of fake private plates. If you are caught driving with a fake private plate, you can face legal consequences. If you are able to help the authorities track down the illegal seller, then you may have a chance at recouping your money.

What is a Tesla car?

Tesla is a leading electric car brand in the UK, offering four main models: Model 3 (a mid-size saloon), Model Y (a compact SUV), Model S (a luxury saloon), and Model X (a luxury SUV). Tesla vehicles are exclusively electric, and gained popularity due to their innovation and eccentric character of the company’s owner, Elon Musk.

They’re known for their sleek designs, powerful electric engines (achieving 0-62 mph in as little as 4.4 seconds), and long driving ranges. Teslas contain unique features such as autopilot abilities, although using a fully self-driving vehicle on UK roads is currently illegal.

You can find both new and used Teslas directly through Tesla’s UK website, with prices ranging from around £39,990 for a new Model 3 to over £100,000 for a top-of-the-line Model S or X.

Are All Electric Cars Automatic?

There may be some confusion regarding getting a private plate for your Tesla, considering they are all-electric vehicles by default. So below, we will clear the air and provide the relevant information you need.

Tesla cars do not require a special process for a private plate

Although Tesla vehicles are leading the way in innovation and are seemingly popular, they do not have a special process that you need to undergo to obtain a private plate for it. You don’t even need to have a vehicle to be able to buy a private plate.

You don’t have to put the private plate on straight away

You are not legally obligated to put your private plate on your vehicle as soon as you’ve bought it. As long as you have a V778 retention document, you can hold on to the plate for 10 years.

The green band is optional

New electric vehicles will have a green band on the number plate as standard, if you get a custom number plate, you can also opt for the green band if your car is electric. However, as of now, you are not legally required to have a number plate with a green band if your car is all-electric.

This means if you have just bought a private plate, you can attach it straight away without having to wait to buy a custom version of the private plate with the green band.

You can customise the private plate

By visiting an established vendor of custom plates, such as Bespoke Plates, we can guide you in ensuring that your customisations stay within the legal threshold of UK number plates. Anything beyond the legal threshold will result in your plate being a show plate, which can not be used on a vehicle being used on public roads.

Tesla plate holders

Tesla have their own number plate holders and other plating accessories, for some people, this may be the perfect addition to their private plate. Although, there are number plate holders available that do just as good of a job.

Can a non-electric car get a green number plate?

No. Although some all-electric cars can use a regular number plate, whether it was originally assigned with one, or is using a private plate. A regular vehicle, or a hybrid, can not use a green number plate.

Green number plates help to identify an all-electric vehicle, that being said, an all electric vehicle can still be identified without this specific number plate. Cars that are non-electric or hybrid can not use a green number plate as their cars still emit emissions.

How to get a custom private plate with a green band?

What is a green number plate?

If the vehicle you have purchased your private plate for is an electric car, the private plate will not reflect this as it does not have the green band on it as default.

As long as you have the relevant documentation, you are able to create a custom version of your private plate, whether you just want the green band, or 3D/4D characters etc.
