Custom number plates explained

New 2024 plates explained

Custom number plates refer to a number plate that has been modified to make it look different. This is completely optional, that being said, some customisations can result in your plate being illegal, whilst others are within the legal remit.

Custom number plates are made by legally recognised platemakers, one of which being Bespoke Plates. We make all of our plate options in-house. That being said, here are some of the most popular options that we offer for plate customisation.

3D / 4D number plates

3D and 4D number plates are a type of number plate that affects the characters of the plate. The result is the characters appearing raised from the plate, creating a 3D aesthetic. The difference between 3D and 4D plates is essentially just the look of the characters themselves. Though the materials used for each option do vary slightly.

Both 3D and 4D options are also coated in a special resin after application of the characters. The result of adding this resin is an extra layer of durability, as well as a glossy and eye-catching finish.

Hex plate

A Hex plate is an alteration that is made to the shape of the number plate. The result is the number plate having an elongated hexagonal shape, as opposed to the regular rectangular shape.

Are custom plates legal in the UK?

There are instances in which a custom number plate can be illegal, however, if you follow the steps below, you can ensure that your number plate is legal in the UK.

The legal terms that a registration plate must adhere to are:

  • be made from a reflective material – for road safety
  • black display characters on a white background (front plate)
  • black display characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern – so as not to distort the readability of your plate
  • be marked to show who supplied the registration plate – to assist with thefts and sourcing queries
  • be marked with a British Standard number – this is ‘BS AU 145e’ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021
  • Characters must not be removable or reflective. If your registration plates were fitted after 1 September 2021, they must also be a single shade of black.

You can find the full list of legal requirements here.

However, if you would prefer to have the plate installed but can’t drive to us, you can find a legal platemaker in your locality through the government portal.

Can I buy a replacement plate from a plate customiser?

Yes, legal platemakers such as Bespoke Plates also have the option for you to purchase a standard replacement plate with no customisations whatsoever. Whether it is for a normal car or an electric vehicle.

Why do people customise their number plates?

When should you renew your private registration?

Some people customise their vehicles in order to attain a performance boost, and some customise their vehicle for aesthetic purposes, this is the category a custom plate finds itself in.

For some people, they want their vehicle to be a reflection of their personality, or may even just prefer the aesthetic provided by a custom number plate, either way, a custom number plate does the job.

Can leased cars get a custom plate?

Depending on the method of attachment of the original plate, and the stipulations provided by the lease provider, you may be able to get a custom plate on a leased car. However, it is extremely unlikely. You should consult your lease provider before committing to any plate customisations.
