Which cars need green number plates?

How to Look After Your Electric Vehicle Better

Green number plates are a legal requirement that are specifically designated to all electric vehicles. This is to indicate that the vehicle is all electric, which is relatively important to certain ANPR systems that attribute the relevant charges in ultra low emission zones. All electric vehicles are exempt from this.

If you have just bought an all electric vehicle, it will come with the green number plate. If you require a replacement, you must find a platemaker who has green number plates.

Why can’t hybrid vehicles have green plates?

Hybrid vehicles still make use of fuel in conjunction to electricity. So it still emits emissions, albeit at a lower level than a non-hybrid or electric vehicle.

Do I have to drive with green number plates?

Yes. If you have an all electric vehicle, it must be driven with a green number plate. If you drive with no plate, or a plate that is not legally assigned to your vehicle, you will be subject to legal consequences which can include…

  • Fines
  • Points on your licence
  • A ban from driving
  • Vehicle confiscation
  • Prison time

The punishment would be relevant to the situation in which you are reprimanded for.

Do electric cars have fewer expenses than a normal car?

At Bespoke Plates, our standard green number plates cost £30. This price can increase should you choose to add our legal customisation onto them. We have multiple customisation options including…

  • Black 3D Gel
  • 4D Gel
  • 4D 3 mm
  • 4D 5 mm

Our plates are made in-house to the legal specifications, (aside from Show Plates). All of our plates are made with the finest quality materials and a highly refined process. We can’t speak to the pricing of other providers, but we guarantee a quality and bespoke finish that stands out from the crowd.

When can I get a green number plate?

If you have an electric vehicle, you would have already got a green number plate with it. If you only want a standard green number plate, you can get one in advance in case your current one breaks, or you can buy a replacement immediately after your current one breaks.

If you want to purchase a bespoke green number plate, with 3D or 4D designs etc, you can create your custom plate at any time you wish, and replace your current number plate with it.

Can I only customise green number plates?

Not at all, our customisation options are available for regular number plates. Whether your car is all electric, hybrid, or regularly fuelled, we have you covered. Our further customisation options include Hex Plates, and variations on the size of the plate itself.

Can I remove the green from my number plate?

No. If your number plate replacement or customisation is for an electric vehicle, it must include the green stripe. The only exception to this is a show plate, which can have a variety of custom designs, but is not legally allowed to drive with.

Laws on number plates

The following laws relate to any number plate that is intended to use on the road. If your plate does not comply with these rules, it will be illegal.

The legal terms that a number plate must adhere to are:

  • be made from a reflective material – for road safety
  • black display characters on a white background (front plate)
  • black display characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern – so as not to distort the readability of your plate
  • be marked to show who supplied the registration plate – to assist with thefts and sourcing queries
  • be marked with a British Standard number – this is ‘BS AU 145e’ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021
  • Characters must not be removable or reflective. If your registration plates were fitted after 1 September 2021, they must also be a single shade of black.

You can find the full list of legal requirements here.

Can number plate laws change?

Yes. Laws are usually updated in response to changes within society, whether this be a new kind of vehicle, a new technology which requires a different kind of number plate, and more. Although laws for number plates aren’t changing every day, they are still subject to be changed at any time.

You should always keep updated of number plate laws, especially if you are considering upgrading your number plate, buying a private plate, or replacing your number plate.
