Green number plates explained

Are green number plates made from acrylic?

Green number plates, also known as electric number plates, are a specific number plate that is assigned to vehicles that are all-electric. You can spot one by the green stripe that is visible on the left-hand side of the plate, whether that’s the front or rear plate.

Why is the colour green used on green number plates?

Green is the colour used for green number plates, as green itself naturally connotes the earth, nature, and safety. These are terms that are naturally attributed to environmentally sustainable practices. Hence, the saying ‘going green’.

How else can I spot an electric vehicle?

Green number plates are the obvious indicator to a vehicle being all-electric, but there are some additional signs, which include…

  • There are no exhaust pipes
  • There are no sounds coming from the vehicle’s engine as you would hear with a normal vehicle.
  • There is usually an indication in the model name of the vehicle that it is all-electric.

Do hybrid cars have a unique number plate?

It would make sense to believe that a hybrid car would have its own indicator to its eco-friendly nature, if not the same as an all-electric vehicle. However, hybrid cars have the same number plate as a non-electric vehicle.

This is due to the fact that hybrid vehicles still produce pollution, as they are only partly electric, not fully. This means they will be under the same stipulations as regular vehicles, such as purchasing fuel etc, albeit at a reduced rate due to the fact they require and use less petrol/diesel.

Do electric cars have to have green number plates?

Do electric cars have to have green number plates?

Yes. There is no circumstance in which an electric vehicle should not be using a green number plate. Green number plates are made specifically for all-electric vehicles and nothing else.

If your vehicle is being driven with no number plate, or the number plate that it wasn’t assigned, you will be subject to legal consequences. These legal consequences can be points, fines, or even bans from driving/ vehicle confiscation depending on the circumstances at play.

Are green number plates all the same?

No. Green number plates, like regular number plates, have unique identification codes that ensure they are not duplicated accidentally on to another vehicle. In terms of customisation, it is allowed to obtain legal vehicle customisation options such as Gel Plates in conjunction with your green number plate, subject to the provider.

Are there any other coloured number plates?

No. In the UK, number plates will either have a white or yellow background. Regardless of the colour, a green number plate will have a single green stripe on the side of the plate itself.

Can you customise green number plates?

What is the GB badge on a number plate?

Yes, as long as you are using the services of a legal platemaker, you can easily opt to get your green number plate legally customised, this can include…

  • 3D plates
  • 4D plates
  • Alternate plating sizes

There may be other options available in the future, so it is always best to keep an eye on the legislation should anything change.

What’s the price of a regular green number plate?

We at Bespoke Plates only charge £30 for a standard green number plate. This price will change should you require any customisation options. Other suppliers may have a more expensive or cheaper cost than us. But rest assured, our quality is second to none.

The legalities of custom registration plates

To clear up any confusion, plate modification, whether that be Hex plates, or gel plates (3D & 4D) are 100% LEGAL if you stick to the outlined rules from the DVLA.* This applies to green number plates and regular number plates alike.

*Please do your due diligence and research, some unverified registration plate providers may not be making their plates to the legal specification, which could become an inconvenience for you. Visiting Bespoke Plates is the best way to avoid this trouble.

Alternatively, using the government gateway to find licenced and approved platemakers is the best option for peace of mind and finding platemakers close to you. Enter your postcode on the government gateway website.

What are the legal requirements for a registration plate?

The legal terms that a registration plate must adhere to are:

  • be made from a reflective material – for road safety
  • black display characters on a white background (front plate)
  • black display characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern – so as not to distort the readability of your plate
  • be marked to show who supplied the registration plate – to assist with thefts and sourcing queries
  • be marked with a British Standard number – this is ‘BS AU 145e’ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021
  • Characters must not be removable or reflective. If your registration plates were fitted after 1 September 2021, they must also be a single shade of black.
