Can I Put a Private Plate on a Motability Car

Mobility cars are a vital necessity for those who live with disabilities. Public transport can be an even greater hurdle, for the person and their carer, if they have one. This is where mobility cars come into play.

They allow for those with disabilities the independence to drive or be transported in a vehicle that accommodates their needs. It is built with them in mind. So with that in mind, are number plate rules the same for a mobility car?

What is a mobility car?

Motability cars explained

Mobility cars are vehicles that are specially modified to help those with disabilities or mobility issues to travel in their own vehicle. For those whose condition prevents them from driving entirely, the vehicle can be driven by someone else.

For a non-driving recipient of a mobility car, it could look like a vehicle with a dedicated ramp for wheelchair access. For driving recipients, the scope of customisation is much larger.

Examples include custom pedals that do not require the foot dexterity of regular pedals, specialised seats, or additional controls that centralise functions of the vehicle in one place. And much more.

How do you get a mobility car?

Schemes such as the ‘Motability Scheme’ allows for mobility vehicles to be leased or financed. You can get a Motability car or vehicle if you’ve been awarded:

  • the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement.

Which disabilities qualify for a mobility car?

In accordance with the previously mentioned benefits, any disability that qualifies for the aforementioned benefits would allow you to be qualified for a mobility car. The scope of disabilities is far-reaching, hence why there is an eligibility threshold for you to pass first.

Private plates – the basics

A private plate is a number plate that has a unique set of characters, this can be in the sense that it has fewer characters, or spells out something, and more. Private plates are completely optional, and serve no purpose other than adding a level of personalisation to the vehicle in question.

Private plates can be purchased by almost anyone. They are available to almost any vehicle, as long as they abide by the following rules set out by the UK driving authority.

  • The vehicle must be legally registered with DVLA in the UK and have a valid MOT certificate.
  • Only operational cars can be assigned private plates, so they must be able to move under their own power.
  • The DVLA reserves the right that you be available for them to carry out inspections on cars which have a private plate. This can be at any time, so it must always be available for inspection. Failing this inspection can lead to a host of consequences, which can include removal of the private plate.
  • The vehicle has been taxed or had a SORN in place continuously for the past 5 years.

Are private plates cheap?

Not exactly, private plates can range from hundreds, to thousands, to tens of thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of pounds! This is due to certain plates being extremely popular for sentimental reasons, or even because the plate spells out something, such as the ‘F1’ number plate.

Can you put a private plate on a mobility car?

Can you put a private plate on a mobility car?

Yes. Putting a private plate on a mobility car is legal and possible. It would be conducted via the same procedure that enables financed or leased cars to use a private plate.

The process would involve contacting the provider of your mobility vehicle and confirming your choice with them. That being said, the private plate, and its application, would require you to pay for it.

The reason for this is that a private number plate is an optional customisation that bears no impact on the vehicle’s performance or accessibility. It is a personal choice.

Can I use a custom plate on a mobility car?

Yes, if you have purchased a Gel Plate, or Hex Plate, whether it is a private plate or not, and decide to use it on your mobility vehicle, it can be achieved. This process would again follow the same procedure that had been previously highlighted.

As long as your custom number plate falls within the legal parameters highlighted by the law, there would be no issue in using the plate on your mobility vehicle. If the plate is a show plate, it is not eligible to be used on any driven vehicle in any circumstances.

Are private plates different for mobility cars?

No. Private plates are applicable to regular and mobility cars. The method of obtaining them is the same regardless of the vehicle you apply it to. The reason for this is that the number plate is not a component that you would necessarily have to deal with once it is on.

This means they are not a functioning part that someone who is differently abled would need to use, unlike a seat, steering wheel, car pedals, etc. If there was an intrinsic function that a number plate required handling to fulfil, then private plates may be different for a mobility car.
