Motability cars explained

Motability cars explained

A motability car are specialised vehicles that are modified specifically to allow access for those with a varying degree of disabilities. These vehicles can be driven by the individual with a disability, depending on its severity, or a registered driver, which can be the individual’s carer.

Motability vehicles can have various customisations applied to it. Some have a ramp and specialised seating for wheelchair users, whilst others may have a special internal set-up on the driver’s side to make driving easier for them. This could be in the form of a hand operated pedal for the gas or breaks etc.

How do you get a mobility car?

Schemes such as the ‘Motability Scheme’ allows for mobility vehicles to be leased or financed. You can get a Motability car or vehicle if you’ve been awarded:

  • the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement.

Can any car be a motability car?

Yes and no. This is subject to the individual with the disability. If the disability does not require a ramp or other large-scale additions, then yes. Almost any car can be a motability car.

However, for those who require wheelchair access, the scope of vehicles that can be customised for wheelchair access is generally more limited. This is purely because the size of a wheelchair, in addition to the space required for safe access, can not be applied with certain kinds of cars.

Can I put a private plate on a motability car?

Can I put a private plate on a motability car?

Yes. Private plates can be applied to a motability car. However, it is not recommended that you do it yourself, unless you have the relevant tools and experience to do so (depending on how you want to attach the plate).

Furthermore, if you have a disability (depending on its severity), or the driver of the motability vehicle isn’t comfortable attaching the plate themselves, the best option is to see a legal plate customiser such as Bespoke Plates.

A legitimate installer will ensure that your private plate is installed securely. Although there will likely be a service charge for this installation, it is worth the investment, as driving with a loose or insecure plate can result in fines as well as other consequences.

Are plating laws different for motability cars?

Not at all. Mobility cars are optimised for someone with a disability to drive the car, or to be driven in a car that is made for their disability in mind. Number plates, whether it is the assigned plate or private plate, it has no bearing on the drivability of the car. Nor do motability cars have a different type of number plate.

Like with any vehicle, a number plate is one of the areas assessed during an MOT. Whether your vehicle is a motability car, or a normal car, and anything else required to take an MOT. MOT’s exist to ensure your vehicle is in working order and not a hazard to yourself, other road users or pedestrians.

A number plate can result in a failed MOT if…

  • it is not identifiable via damages or purposeful obscuring
  • If the plate is missing
  • If the plate is loosely attached
  • If the plate is contorted beyond how it should normally be.
  • The number plate is not the registered number plate of the vehicle.

Motability cars are not exempt from this, and are subject to the same consequences if their number plate, whether it is normal, private, or customised, is unsafe.

What is a private plate?

A private plate is a number plate that has a unique set of characters, this can be in the sense that it has fewer characters, or spells out something, and more. Private plates are completely optional, and serve no purpose other than adding a level of personalisation to the vehicle in question.

Are their rules for private plates?

Yes. As long as they follow the law, private plates can be purchased by almost anyone. They are available to almost any vehicle, as long as they abide by the following rules set out by the UK driving authority.

  • The vehicle must be legally registered with DVLA in the UK and have a valid MOT certificate.
  • Only operational cars can be assigned private plates, so they must be able to move under their own power.
  • The DVLA reserves the right that you be available for them to carry out inspections on cars which have a private plate. This can be at any time, so it must always be available for inspection. Failing this inspection can lead to a host of consequences, which can include removal of the private plate.
  • The vehicle has been taxed or had a SORN in place continuously for the past 5 years.
