What is a green number plate?

A green number plate, also known as an electric vehicle number plate, is a number plate with a distinct green stripe on the side of the plate. This stripe is a clear indicator that the vehicle is an electric vehicle. But why exactly is it important to know that?
The benefit of this is limited when it comes to other road users, the main benefit is to inform ANPR systems that those electric vehicles are exempt from charge in ULEZ. (Ultra Low Emission Zones).
Do hybrid vehicles use green number plates?
No, hybrid vehicles use regular number plates. Although hybrid vehicles have a reduced carbon emission, and therefore use less fuel whilst harnessing electricity, they still use petrol or diesel, meaning they still emit pollution. Green number plates are made for vehicles with zero carbon emissions.
Is a green number plate made differently?
No. Green number plates do not have a unique material or creation process, there are made in the exact same way as a regular plate. The only addition is the process of applying the green stripe.
Are electric vehicles actually friendly to the environment?

It can not be underestimated that the emissions released by vehicles have contributed to changes in our environment. If not here in the UK, then further afield in countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan, who have experienced the consequences of greenhouse gasses in their environment leading to devastating floods.
That is why reducing our carbon emissions is critical. But it can be argued that fully electric vehicles still require rubber tires, which in itself accounts for a sizeable contribution of environmentally damaging processes. So what exactly is the solution? As of right now, only time will tell.
Can I get a green number plate?
Yes. But under certain circumstances, there are three occasions in which you can get a green number plate.
- You are getting a standard replacement green number plate for your electric vehicle.
- You want a green number plate that has legal customisations such as 3D and 4D gel plates.
- If you are in the process of purchasing an electric vehicle and want a customised plate for it in advance.
As we highlighted earlier, green number plates are strictly reserved for electric vehicles. Any legal plate vendor will not install green plates on a vehicle that is clearly petrol or a hybrid.
Do green number plates cost more?
We can’t speak to the price range of other plate providers. However, we at Bespoke Plates charge the same price for an electric number plate as we do for a standard number plate, which is £30.
Of course, any additional customisations you may want will increase this baseline price.
Can you put on a green plate on a non-electric vehicle?
No. If you do attempt to do this and are caught, you will receive legal punishments, which can include points and fines. To put it bluntly, it is a foolish idea to even consider, simply because electric vehicles don’t have exhausts that emit gas. So anyone with any awareness can quickly tell that are being fraudulent. But why would someone want to do this anyway?
There could be a number of reasons that someone would put a green plate on a non-electric vehicle. They could have stolen the plate from someone else, which helps them, as it could contribute to alluding ANPR systems.
Ultimately, it should not be attempted or considered. You should only buy a green number plate if you have, or are going to have, an electric vehicle.
Are green number plates attached differently?

Unless the vehicle itself has unique or special features, then generally no. Green number plates are attached in the same way as a regular or gel plate. This can be…
You have the option to have your plate delivered to you for you to install yourself, or take to a trusted number plate customiser closer to you to attach. Bespoke Plates also offers installation for the plates we sell.
How do professionals install new number plates?
Any reputable number plate installer begins their installation service with a quick consultation, this can include…
- Checking the front and rear bumper for any obvious damages before removing and installing a new plate. Damages could impact the removal and installation process.
- Ask for your preferred method of installation.
- Highlight any possible maintenance or stipulations that come with your preferred installation method. (For example, removing a plate that was attached with sticky pads could leave residue).
- Begin the relevant installation process, making sure to clean the bumpers if using sticky pads. Or, making sure to secure the plates properly with screws, ensuring symmetry and consistency with each placement.
